Though custom tattoos are fast catching on, flash sheets will still continue to thrive. Market flash tattoos are a great option for clients who are not sure what they want. They are inexpensive and come with art stencils for a perfect tattoo.
If you are passionate about tattoos and wish to flaunt them for long, flash tattoos are not meant for you. Due to their shorter life, the designs in flash tattoos are smaller as well. If you’re designing flash for your tattoo portfolio, you not only want your artwork to be good, but you want the shop to remember you. When it comes to flash, we recommend still using the lessons you’ve learned from working with other artist’s designs - but putting your own spin on it. We’ve talked about different methods you can use to make your own flash without copying other artists. Using these methods can still be difficult - especially if you’re new to tattooing and aren’t used to drawing with the flow of the muscles.
How New Technology is Helping Tattoo Artists
If you’re ready to take the plunge and get a flash tattoo, be sure to do your research first so you make the right choices for you and your body art. Place the stencil against the part of your body where you want the tattoo to be. Use one hand to hold it firmly against the skin, so that the cut out shapes are lying flat. Use the other hand to color in the shapes with the markers you chose. When you're finished, lift the stencil away and allow the marker ink to dry.Make sure you apply the tattoo to clean, dry skin.

Creating a Stencil Tattoo
Know exactly what you’re going to put on the sheet and where you’re going to put it by sketching your ideas first and having a solid plan laid out. Once you’ve mapped out a plan, you can create your actual flash sheet. However, most new artists get stuck on creating custom tattoo flash.

Even after you’ve traced tons of designs or copied other artists’ work for practice, it can be hard to draw something completely unique. As a result, the popularity of flash tattoos in New York City has led to lawsuits. A recent case involved a tattoo artist named Matthew Reed who filed a federal lawsuit to prevent Rasheed Wallace from using his tattoo in an ad for Nike. However, the case was settled out of court before a judge could make a final ruling.
If you’re going to be using Copic markers, use digital photo paper so the markers don’t bleed. Finding flash online gives you access to lots of great designs you can start tattooing immediately. These designs are easy to customize and are a great way to find a design that isn’t too complicated. You can use them as they are, or make subtle changes to fit your taste and preferences.
On the other hand, a design with hardly any lines and just a lot of shading and color doesn’t work well for flash, either. It would look good as a tattoo, but there isn’t much point to flash art if it’s basically open space with no pre-defined shape. The artist may as well just do a custom piece from scratch. The image should be well defined and the detail should be just enough to create a dynamic picture without cramming thin lines together. Your friends may think your roses and skulls are da bomb, but tattoo artists have seen a million of them. If you want to sell your art, it’s got to be truly unique.
Flip your design sheet horizontally, so that all designs and text are backwards. This will allow your designs to display properly when applied.
